I hope to get the DCHDMI mod in the future. Needless to say, I'll be returning the product as I am fairly unsatisfied with it. Dark and blurry is how I would describe the result. It wasn't unplayable, but there was a very clear difference in clarity when compared to what I was used to when using VGA prior. It honestly felt like a minor step-up from trying to use composite on a modern television. But this was garbage for what it is supposed to achieve. Let me tell you, I am not a extremely technical guy when it comes to image quality. So in my mind I had hoped that it would at least be as good as me using my Retro-Bit VGA box, just funnelled through HDMI. My local retro game store (A&C Games Toronto) only had the Pound cable as an option. I was going over to a friends place to show him Power Stone and needed a quick fix. I reluctantly ended up having to test out the Pound cable. To work around the Dreamcast's pixel clock weirdness you'll either need to find a VGA to HDMI convertor that is more capable and that lets you tweak the sample rate (the OSSC mentioned in this thread is one such option) or bypass the issue at the source with the DCHDMI mod (which is also compatible with games that do not support VGA output).

Some revisions of the Pound cable had a unique problem where instead of 75Ω resistors on the RGB inputs they used inductors, resulting in a picture with blown out highlights from the incorrect signal levels. the Pound or Beharbros devices) would look like then you could try that with your existing VGA cable. The same chip is used in the Mini VGA2HDMI, which can be found online for under a fiver, so if you want to try out what one of these cables (e.g.

The VGA to HDMI conversion cables normally used contain an off-the-shelf chip that is fixed to the PC standard sampling rate, which is why you get the same squished and misaligned picture. Normally booting the console to the main menu and selecting "auto config" or "auto calibrate" from your TV's picture settings menu is enough to get a great picture. Some devices also allow you to adjust the phase to really get a properly-sampled and sharp picture. When the Dreamcast is plugged directly into a TV or monitor over VGA the TV or monitor usually provides controls to compensate for the Dreamcast's pixel clock, with the pixel clock correction normally being labelled width/size/clock or something similar. This is why the default picture ends up being slightly squished horizontally and misaligned, and the sample rate errors can also lead to vertical stripes and a generally softer picture than you'd otherwise get. The Dreamcast's VGA output suffers from the way that the pixel clock it uses is quite a bit faster than the pixel clock used for standard 640x480 VGA from PCs.
